Penn’s Ava Zachary named NHSSCA National Athlete of the Year

Penn High School Softball star Ava Zachary was named the 2025 National Female Athlete of the Year by the National High School Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association.
Zachary, a University of Notre Dame Softball commit, helped lead Penn to a State Championship in 2023. The Kingsmen are currently ranked No. 4 in the state this season.
More than 50 finalists from across the country were considered for the award.
According to Penn Strength Coach Matt Cates, Zachary is a softball player who has been a tremendous student athlete in the weight room, field of play and classroom.  She was selected by achieving national excellence in the weight room, speed data, athletic achievements, leadership accomplishments, GPA, and post high school plans.
Penn’s Jake Balis, who is now on the Vanderbilt University Football Team, was named the NHSSCA National Male Athlete of the Year last year.
Penn High School is now the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in the history of the NHSSCA National Athlete of the Year Award.
