Kingsmen Athletics Review March 1-6

Penn’s bid for a high school boys basketball Sectional Championship came up short as the Kingsmen were defeated by Elkhart, 49-34, Saturday night, March 6.
Penn finishes the season with a 12-12 record, winning eight of its last 12 games.
Caleb Applegate led Penn with 10 points.
Markus Burton scored seven points and had 11 rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Penn advanced to the Sectional Championship game by stunning two-time defending Sectional champion Northridge, 45-40, in the semi-final round of the Elkhart High School Boys Basketball Sectional on Friday, March 5.
Penn avenged a 72-64 regular-season loss, holding Northridge to a season-low 40 points.
Markus Burton dealt out a double-double for the Kingsmen – 15 points, 13 rebounds. Burton also had five assists and three steals.
Joe Smith swished four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Caleb Applegate scored 7 points. The Senior hit two free throws with :13 left to give Penn a 45-40 lead.
Casey Shultz scored 6 points and battled for 6 rebounds.
In the Sectional opener, Sophomore point guard Markus Burton torched the nets for 30 points as Penn’s state tournament run started with a dominating 57-25 victory against Goshen in the Elkhart high school boys basketball Sectional on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at historic Northside Gym in Elkhart.
Burton scored his 30 points on 8-of-11 shooting – including 4-of-6 three-pointers – and 2-of-2 free throws. Burton also dished out six assists and grabbed six rebounds. He also had two steals.
Casey Shultz connected on 5-of-6 shots inside and finished with 10 points. Shultz muscled inside for five rebounds.
Caleb Applegate contributed seven points to Kingsmen victory, hitting 3-of-5 shots, including a 3-pointer. Applegate had seven rebounds.
