Avari Welty will be continuing her academic and athletic careers at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Welty chose Wisconsin Lutheran because of the environment. Not only will it provide her with a new home to play softball, but it also will be a great start to her future before graduating.
“I chose WLC because the school was perfect,” Welty said. “The campus was just the right size and had cool features like a children’s hospital in the backyard of the school. I liked this because I want to be a labor and delivery nurse and I can get a job there before I graduate. I also really like how updated their weight room and winter training area was.”
During Welty’s Fall Softball season with her travel team, the Kingsmen outfielder batted .443 and had an on-base percentage of .493. She had 27 hits on the season with two triples and four doubles. Her defense was strong too with only one error and 24 putouts.
Penn softball has taught Welty to be a team player and to put effort into the team and not just herself. Another big takeaway from Penn softball is putting in the work to get better and be more successful.
“Penn softball has taught me many different things,” Welty said. “The biggest thing that I would bring to college with me is how to be a good teammate. Coach Zachary always uses the phrase, ¨We over Me.¨ This quote will stick with me forever and remind me that it’s a team effort, not just you as an individual. Something else Penn softball has taught me is to work hard. To be better you have to work hard. That is why Penn has such a great softball program because of the work and effort we all put into it.¨
Coach Zachary is aware of Welty’s many skills on and off the field.
“Avari is a hardworking student-athlete who has overcome several setbacks over the years,” Zachary said. “We are very proud of her for never giving up and reaching her goal of playing college softball. Avari is an outfielder who tracks the ball well, has a strong arm, and at the plate, she consistently puts pressure on the defense. Beyond the great things that she does on the field, Avari is a kind and supportive teammate who is always putting the team first. We are so excited to watch her journey continue!”
This upcoming season will be Welty’s third year with Penn softball and she plans to help the team to another state title.
