Lady Kingsmen Basketball Falls Short to Merrillville

The Penn Kingsmen varsity girl’s basketball team fell short to Merrillville High School on Saturday, December 15. The score was a close 43-47.

Anna Sachire (junior) led the Kingsmen with 13 points. Jessa Troy (senior) also contributed an astonishing 12 points.

When asked about the outcome of this game, Sachire said, “I think we went into it thinking we would win and that mindset made us lose. We thought it would be an easy win.”

Lizzy Green, a Penn Senior, also gave some insight on what she thought about the game and its results.

“I think we started off lacking the intensity we needed in the first quarter and the whole game just followed that. We started off not great and had to play catch-up for the rest of the game. We weren’t really working together well as a team and were frustrated at times,” Green said.

The day before this loss, Penn had beaten Mishawaka Marian 64-19. This feel-good win streak did not continue into Saturday. The Merrillville Pirates were up 10-0 before the Kingsmen got some points on the board. Like Green Said, this set the girls off on the wrong foot and forcing them to play catch up the rest of the night.

Heading into halftime the score was Penn 17, Merrillville 28. On average, the Kingsmen were down by about 10 points during the majority of the game. They began to make a comeback at the end of the 4th quarter, but the clock ran out.

This devastating loss dropped the Kingsmen’s record to 6-4. The next will be against Concord on Tuesday, December 17. This will be an away game.
