Lila VanHoveln’s journey from the IHSAA Cross Country State Championship in 2024, where she finished just short of her goals in 59th place, to an impressive eighth place the following year is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and passion for the sport and her training. This remarkable leap from a 5K time of 18:55.1 to 17:40.6 demonstrates how hard work and a positive outlook on training can lead to profound change.
After she finished in 2024, Lila felt a mix of disappointment and determination. “That race was tough, and I knew I had to step up my game to compete at a higher level,” she recalled.
That race became a massive turning point, pushing her to commit fully to her training. With the support of her coach and teammates, Lila embraced her training and outlook, transforming her approach to her typical everyday running.
From early morning runs in rain, shine, and sun to grueling tempo training sessions, “I learned that consistency is key,” she said. “Every run, every workout, brought me closer to my goal.” Keeping these things in mind allowed her to train even harder and remain motivated even when things got tough.
“Lila just continued to show up everyday and just really put the work in,” teammate Arianna Balinnang said. “You could tell how motivated she was.”
VanHoveln quickly realized that her aspirations were becoming reality when she captured the school record at IHSAA Regionals in Track, also taking the Warsaw Regional title. Running an astonishing 10:41.69 for 3200 meters and qualifying for the IHSAA Track Outdoor State 2025, this was just the start of her journey. Also showing off all of her hard work over the cold winter months.
However, the culmination of her hard work arrived at the 2025 state championship, where she finished 8th. In doing so, VanHoveln also captured the school record for a second time. Finishing the 5,000-meter race in 17:40, as she crossed the finish line and looked up at her time, a wave of emotions washed over her.
“It felt surreal. I realized all my efforts had finally paid off,” VanHoveln expressed.
As VanHoveln looks ahead to her Junior Track season, she remains focused on her goals, ready to tackle new challenges and keep them in mind as she continues her running journey. Watch out for VanHoveln on the track as she looks to capture a second straight IHSAA Regional Title, and further improve upon her school record in the 3200-meter.
