Noah Rossow: Putting the Student in Student-Athlete

Ranked 106 of all boys swimmers in the state, Junior Noah Rossow reigns successful in all aspects of his life.

When his dad signed him up for the swim team in first grade, Rossow wasn’t too sure of it. However, as he’s grown, he’s become dedicated. He’s had affiliations with the Michiana Stars, South Bend Swim Club, Irish Aquatics, Michiana Marlins Swim Club, and, of course, Penn High Schools swim team.

His personal bests include a 50 yard freestyle time of 24.46 and a 100 yard freestyle time of 52.54 at the Indiana Swimming Inc. North Divisional Championship last summer.

Rossow was named as winter of the “South Bend Tribune’s” Student of the Week in mid-January due to his goal of understanding and resourcefulness. His nomination was based on how he manages to focus on his schoolwork while still maintaining athletic discipline. His goal is to be a math teacher when he gets older.

“I like knowledge. When you have more knowledge, you can understand more people in the world and get where they’re coming from,” he said.

Outside of his everyday classes, Rossow spends his time before school at mentoring middle school athletes through the Futures Lifting program. He’s also involved in the freshman mentoring program at Penn. Max Szuba was one of the freshmen Rossow mentored this past year.

“Noah’s really good at encouraging people, and always gives out good advice,” Szuba said.

Rossow considers himself a busy person, but he loves what he does as a swimmer.

“Eat, sleep, swim, repeat,” he laughed. “In all seriousness, I’ve had issues with time management for a while. It’s taken a while to work on these skills.”

Every Sunday, Rossow dedicates a few hours to get all of his homework due for the week done so he can focus on his sport during the week. He feels lucky to go to a school with so many opportunities, and he plans on continuing his athletic career throughout the rest of his life.
