Girls Soccer: Sachire brings passion to the pitch

The sun dips behind the bleachers at Penn’s soccer field, casting long shadows across the green turf. The sharp thwack of a soccer shoe hitting a ball mixes with shouts and laughter as players sprint across the field.
For Penn student-athlete Emily Sachire, being on the field is more than just playing a sport; it’s something she has loved for most of her life.
Sachire started playing soccer when she was very young. Watching her older sister Anna play helped spark her interest in the game.
“I first started playing when I was around four, and my mom coached my sisters’ team, and I always wanted to play with them,” Sachire said.
Like many athletes, Sachire has faced tough decisions during her sports career.
One of the hardest decisions for her was deciding whether she was going to continue playing multiple sports or just focus on soccer.
“Choosing if I should continue to do multiple sports or just narrow it down to one, and thinking how it would affect my future career,” Sachire said. “I ended up just narrowing it down to one, and so far I haven’t regretted my decision.”
During the soccer season, Sachire’s schedule can get pretty busy. After spending a long day at school, she often has practice and/or strength training. She usually has games on the weekend as well.
Even with the pressure of the big games and balancing practices and strength training, Sachire tries to stay calm and focused. “Before a big game, I try not to get in my head too much and just worry about having fun and doing the best I can,” she said.
When she isn’t playing soccer, Sachire enjoys spending time outside with friends and family. For Sachire, soccer isn’t just a sport. It’s a passion that started when she was four years old and continues to shape her future both on and off the field.
