High school swimmer Anika Guenther is ready to make waves this season. Coming off an impressive runner-up finish at last year’s state championship, the Penn High School senior is excited and determined for what’s ahead.
“I’ve been counting down the days to the first meet,” Guenther said. “Last year was incredible, but finishing second just makes me hungrier. I want that top spot and know I can get there.”
Guenther made a splash at last year’s state competition with a standout performance, narrowly missing the gold by mere tenths of a second. Despite the narrow loss, the experience taught her valuable lessons.
“Competing at that level showed me how important the mental side of the sport is,” Guenther explained. “It’s not just about swimming fast—it’s about staying focused, trusting your training, and keeping your cool under pressure.”
That training has been a focal point during the offseason. Guenther has spent the past several months refining technique and building strength with guidance from her coaches, who believe this season could be a breakthrough.
“Guenther is one of the hardest-working athletes I’ve ever coached,” Coach John VanDriessche said. “She has the talent, but it’s her discipline and passion that sets her apart. I have no doubt she’ll accomplish great things this year.”
The support of teammates has also played a crucial role in Guenther’s journey. The Kingsmen swim team has built a reputation as a close-knit group, and the camaraderie is evident both in and out of the pool.
