Behind the Success: The Story of Halie Horwarth

Published on

Halie Horwarth is a two-time All-American since freshman year. At the age of 16 and she’s already making waves in the wrestling world. Her success didn’t happen overnight. From early beginnings to intense training, the young athlete’s journey has been marked by perseverance, support from coaches and family, and unwavering love for the sport. Here’s a closer look at how Horwarth rose to her dominant position, featuring insights from her coaches and the star athlete herself.

Early Beginnings

Horwarth’s journey began in Mishawaka when she started doing pull-ups on a playground bar at recess.

As she recalls, “I got really good at Gaga ball and the pull-up bar. The recognition I got for excelling at those was a turning point for me. That’s when it all started.”

From that moment on she knew she had to push herself to be the best she could be.

“Horwarth is tough, passionate about the sport, and competes to the best of her ability every day,” says Jeff Hart, head soccer coach.

One of the key figures behind Horwarth’s success is Coach Brad Harper. Harper immediately knew her potential and how far she could go.

“I can see her going all the way to state from freshman year,” Harper said.

Looking Forward

Horwarth’s determination on and off the mats is what has lead her to where she is now.

“The real pay-off for me isn’t just the wins or titles, though those are great. It’s the growth,” Horwarth says. “Being a two-time All-American, Athlete of the Month, and having my name recognized for strength are all things I’m really proud of, but it’s more than that.”

It’s not all about the titles, she’s become more confident in her abilities as she progresses through the weight room. The biggest reward to her is that she’s setting herself up for whatever it is she want’s to do next in life.

“She’s in a great place, with the IHSAA making girls wrestling a full-fledged sport, of making an impact because of her skill, mindset, and positive outlook on life and competition,” Hart says.

Off the Mats

Teagan Fronek says, “Halie isn’t only one of the funniest people i know, but she is someone that you know you can always go to.”

“She never has anything bad to say about anyone. Even on the field she always encourages and never takes them down. A true crown-straightner,” Freshman Kendall Dean says. A loud and positive teammate. “Nothing anyone does, no matter how bad, she’s always there to support.”

“It’s about being ready for whatever life throws at me, and knowing that I’ve put in the work to get there.” Horwarth adds. Her friendships help her get through tough times, and she puts her head down and works through anything and everything. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence, and that’s something I carry with me everywhere, not just in sports.”
