Anna Haeck’s Passion for Softball

Anna Haeck is a sophomore left-handed pitcher for the Penn Softball Team. When she was little her parents put her in many different sports to see which one she would like. Many of them did not stick with her, but when she turned ten she started softball. From then on, she’s always had a passion for softball.

Haeck is hardworking and determined. She attends multiple weekly pitching and hitting lessons and participates in extra work outside of lessons. On top of that, she goes to speed training two times a week and lifts weights in school. She also does different morning workouts the school offers. Haeck works hard to be the best player for herself and her teammates.

Haeck’s biggest challenge is her mental game. Her travel softball experience has been playing for teams that have not allowed her to play her desired positions. The lack of playing time negatively impacted her confidence. She felt that since her coaches couldn’t believe in her she shouldn’t either. Now Haeck has found teammates and coaches who believe in her and allow her to play the positions she strives to play.

Haeck said, “ I am more confident in myself as a person and player now”.

She is working hard to maintain her confidence and not revert to her negative view. Before games, she feels nervous but also excited. Haeck worries about making errors but she reminds herself that she can only do her best. Once the game is over she is proud of herself feeling successful and accomplished.

Penn Softball Coach Anna Irons had the pleasure of coaching Haeck during her freshman season. Coach Irons views Haeck as a very positive, outgoing, and kind person.

Coach Irons said, “You can see her personality come through on the field when she is cheering loudly for her teammates, and picking them up when they’re down. She also is not scared to ask questions and learn!”

Haeck’s teammates see her put in a lot of effort and can see her perseverance.

Coach Irons said, “ No matter what she’s been through Anna is always willing to adapt and do whatever it is the team needs from her or what coaches ask of her. She wants to push herself and make herself better and is not scared to fail. Her resilience shows through her positive attitude as well!”

Haeck’s biggest motivation is her dad. Last year Haeck faced a devastating loss when her dad passed away. Many people would have quit but Haeck pushed through playing in honor of her dad.

Haeck said, “ My dad, my best friend, he drove me to all of my lessons, showed up to all of my games, all of my tournaments, everything.”

While it can be very difficult for Haeck to attend lessons and play softball without him Haeck goes because she knows he would want her to. She is also self-motivated.

Haeck said, “I motivate myself by setting small goals throughout practices and games and once I accomplish them I celebrate the small successes.”

She has also recognized that exercising helps with her mental health which keeps her motivated. Even though Haeck is very self-motivated she has a big support group. Her support system includes her family and friends.

Haeck said, “My mom has been so supportive she does everything in her power to make sure I get everything I need to succeed.”

While Haeck went through a devastating loss of her father she has continued to stay positive and hardworking. Not only has she been positive towards herself but she always cheers up her teammates when they are feeling down. Haeck’s huge support system has allowed her to become confident and not lose her passion for softball.
