Getting to Know: Braxton Bontrager

Braxton Bontrager is a two-sport athlete at Penn. The Senior is a part of the Rugby 15s and 7s program, along with wrestling for the Kingsmen.

What do you like about your sport?: I love the physicality combined with the tactical battle within the sport. You can be a good player if you are an athlete or if you have a good understanding, but to be great requires both.

What is your favorite memory with the team?: My favorite memory is probably celebrating my first 15s try with the team. I ended up saying corny stuff, and the boys teasing me for it is always a good laugh.

What does a post-game meal look like?: A post-game meal is usually a copious amount of fast food when we stop for food on the trip back.

How do you build a connection with your teammates?: The game itself builds a lot of connection. Knowing that you and your teammates are going to put bodies on the line and feel sore the next day builds a special type of brotherhood.

How has becoming a captain changed your responsibilities?: As the captain, I understand that my actions influence the team as a whole. Now I have the responsibility to work my butt off and get the team to follow. No one wants to follow a leader who does not do the hard stuff himself.

Who is an athlete (at any level) that you look up to and why?: I look up to Michael Phelps a lot; his dedication and consistency, never missing a day for years at a time, are inspiring.

What are your hobbies outside of Rugby?: I try to spend as much of my time outside of rugby lifting and spending time with the people important to me.

What have you done outside of practice to help you become a better player?: Speed training and watching my film and film at the pro level.

What made you start playing rugby?: My Dad played Penn rugby, and I have been around it my whole life,

What is your message to students who are interested in Penn Rugby?: Give it a try. Rugby can do so much for you, from college opportunities, travelling abroad, meeting new friends or even just a really good workout. Rugby is a game for everyone, no matter height, weight, gender, beliefs, or who you love; we have a place for you.
