Getting to Know: Mathias Gonzalez Alcantara

Mathias Gonzalez Alcantara is a sophomore junior varsity player in boys’ soccer, playing multiple positions, including the left wing and striker.

How would you say your summer’s been?

It was pretty good. I spent a lot of time with family and practicing, but I unfortunately got an injury in the middle of it. I’ve recovered by now, thankfully.

What are some things you enjoy about Boys Soccer?

I really enjoy the chemistry of our team, as well as the general teamwork all around. I believe that teamwork is essential for a well-working team, no matter the case.

Why did you choose to play soccer, rather than football or basketball?

I think I took a fondness for soccer because of my parents. They played soccer all the time, especially when they were younger. My grandparents also played soccer, and when they introduced me to it, I immediately knew this was for me.

Can you tell me some things about the position you play?

Sure. I mostly play left-wing. You need a high top speed, acceleration, and technique, to be able to get over the defenders, which is why I was chosen for this position.

What are some of the things you excel at in soccer specifically?

I think I excel at speed, teamwork, and controllability of the ball. These are really important for just about any soccer player, especially left or right wings.

What are your plans for after high school?

I would say I plan on going to a nice college that has the option to do soccer, of course. I’m also really wanting to focus on my career and studying, which means I might have to put less time into soccer for a while.

What other sports do you play, and which is your favorite? Additionally, why is it your favorite?

So I play track as well, partially to prepare myself for soccer. Track is very good for physical conditioning. I would say it’s my favorite because I really enjoy running. I’m also fast, which not only helps with soccer but a lot of events in track.

What are your role models for soccer?

I honestly love Messi. I would definitely go with him as my favorite, but there’s a difference between a favorite person and a role model. Renoldo is my role model because he is very disciplined and has a high mentality, which is why I look up to him instead of Messi.

What are your plans for college?

Well, I plan on going to Purdue University in West Lafayette, where I’m gonna study aviation. I’ve always wanted to be a pilot.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

I see myself doing soccer and teaching my kids how to play it. I think I’m gonna wait for a little while before I teach them soccer, though. Some things are much more important than soccer, like teaching them to be upstanding citizens who adhere to the law.
