Many students want to help their communities but are unsure where to start.
Sophomore Will Abercrombie, a member of Penn’s Football and Boys Wrestling teams, found a way to turn that desire into action by founding Little Blessing Bags.
The organization focuses on helping people who struggle to afford basic necessities. Through inspiration from a local non-profit and support from others, Abercrombie has created a student-led initiative that is already making a meaningful impact.
For donations, students and community members can contact Little Blessing Bags through its Instagram page, @lilblessingbags, or visit the website https://littleblessingbags.org/. There is a contact form where donors can reach out and can coordinate the best way to collect supplies.
Students can participate by donating items such as new school supplies—folders, notebooks, pencils, pens, highlighters, rulers—as well as hygiene products like toothbrushes and toothpaste. Monetary donations are also helpful. Clothing items are also accepted.
Abercrombie started Little Blessing Bags because he wanted to help people in a real and practical way. He explained that he noticed how many people around him were struggling, even with basic needs such as clothing and supplies. Rather than simply feeling bad about the situation, he wanted to take action and do something that would truly make a difference. This motivation led him to create an action that focuses on direct support for those in need.
The idea for Little Blessing Bags began over the summer when Abercrombie saw his mother working with Angels in the Attic, a local non-profit that helps abused families relocate and restart their lives. Through this experience, he met with the organization’s founder, who told him that they were unable to help students inside schools. This conversation encouraged Abercrombie to think of a way he could help people within the school system, which ultimately led to the creation of Little Blessing Bags.
Abercrombie emphasized that Little Blessing Bags relies on help from others in the community. He shared that people can contribute by donating backpacks, clothing, or money, and he has already received several donations. He also explained that the experience has been extremely rewarding. Seeing people’s reactions, even just a smile or a simple thank you, makes his efforts worthwhile and reminds him why he started the organization.
Little Blessing Bags shows how one student’s idea can grow into something that positively affects others. Through his motivation to help, inspiration from a local non-profit, and support from the community, Abercrombie has created an action that makes a real difference. His work demonstrates that even small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact.
