Getting to Know: Gavin Joseph

Gavin Joseph is a Sophomore who plays Football and Basketball for the Kingsmen.

What’s an important thing that a coach or teammate said that stuck with you?: One thing I remember is there is always someone working to either take your spot or to beat you so don’t take anything off. This sticks with me because I feel myself get complacent sometimes and have to remember to keep pushing myself because there are always people working that have the same goal as me.

What professional athletes inspired you to become the athlete you are today?: Devonta Smith inspired me as I am a big Alabama fan and we have a similar body type at the same position.

What’s an important life lesson that you learned from sports?: I learned not to take anything for granted because while you are playing your sport. You really don’t understand all the opportunities you have and overlook it.

Who is someone you look up to?: I look up to many teammates and players I watch everyday, like Buddy Hurley and Jeremiah Mitchell.

What do you like to do outside of school and sports?: I like hanging out with friends, watching sports, and playing video games.

How is a typical day during the season like for you?: A typical day is going to school, practice or game, go home, eat and shower, watch some TV, and then get ready for bed.

What setbacks in your athletic career have you faced, and how did you overcome them?: I broke my arm pretty severely in 2022 and faced many setbacks emotionally and physically but kept working to get stronger and recover keeping a positive mindset throughout it.  I also tore 2 labrums on my right shoulder recently and am still working to overcome them with therapy to get my shoulder stronger without having to get surgery.

What kind of music do you listen to before a game?: I listen to a variety, mostly upbeat rap, but also some slower music like Drake to stay calm while being locked in.

What is your favorite thing about football?: My favorite thing about football is the team aspect and making big plays to help my team.

How do you balance academics and athletics?: I focus on my academics when I have things to do because my academics are important to me and comes before my sport.
