Colden Hernandez delivered the knockout punch in the annual ‘Backyard Brawl,’ breaking loose for a 32-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter as Penn rallied to beat archrival Mishawaka, 28-22, in high school football action.
Hernandez scored two touchdowns, a one-yard plunge and then his go-ahead 32-yard sprint with 6:52 left in the game.
Penn trailed the visiting Cavemen 16-0 in the first quarter, but didn’t let the score get to them. The Kingsmen would go on to outscore Mishawaka 28-6.
Hernandez’ TD and quarterback Landon Hall’s two-point conversion finished off the scoring, and the rugged Kingsmen defense held on.
The Wild Bunch was active this game. After allowing 10.2 yards a carry in the first two drives for Mishawaka, they all rallied together and limited the Cavemen to 3.8 yards a carry for their last 43 plays.
Landon Hall was 13-0f-17 passing for 122 yards, with 1 TD and no interceptions.
Brayson Hurley scored on a nine-yard TD run.
Chase Buckwheat scored on an eight-yard pass from Hall.
Hurley snared six passes for 74 yards.
