Chase Buckwheat’s success on and off the field

Chase Buckwheat is a sophomore at Penn High School and plays on the football team. During his freshman year he played Cornerback.

“It has to be my second favorite position, but my first has to be running back because that’s where I first started.” Buckwheat said.

Buckwheat has put in a lot of work during the off season. He worked out so much to where he got stronger to where he earned a name in the All-American weightlifting combine.

“Throughout my whole life playing football I’ve always been small smaller than everyone else, but to me that means nothing I put in lots of work during the off season and I made a name for myself Yes, I may only stand at 5 ft 5 but I can squat 315 and can run a 4.6 40 yard dash,” Buckwheat said.

Buckwheat says he’s excited to prove himself while playing the next three years for the Kingsmen.

“I don’t just play the sport because I love it I play it because it’s like therapy for me I can escape the outside world and just be me out on the field and get out all of my anger,” Buckwheat said.

During the 47-7 victory against South Bend Washington, Buckwheat had two interceptions for the Kingsman.

Buckwheat also plays a big role on the JV team. Last week he had two interceptions again and returned one for a touchdown to put 6 points on the Kingsmen JV team’s 35-7 win against Washington.

Outside of school, Buckwheat helped volunteer to coach the Packers for the Granger Rocket football team.

“I love to help the kids, especially the ones who used to be my size. It’s like watching me all over again but making them better,” he said. “I love seeing them grow up watching them play the game that they love just like me.”

Also this year, Buckwheat helped with the Penn Kingsman Football Youth Camp.

“I just want to see the youth community for football to grow and for the little guys to see how amazing football is even if you’re smaller than everyone else,” Buckwheat said.
