Boys Volleyball: Joshua Kim’s Dedication

Although the Boys Volleyball team has just been created this year, Joshua Kim will dedicate himself to becoming one of the top volleyball players at his school.

Kim is a sophomore who was a former club member in Boy’s Volleyball Club in his freshman year of high school. This is the first year the IHSAA recognizes Boys Volleyball as an official sport. This year, he plans to try out for the boy’s volleyball team.

During his childhood, he would play volleyball with his church members. Ever since then, he’s had a passion for the sport. However, there was one obstacle in his way. He couldn’t find any opportunities to continue his passion for his sport until the boys volleyball club was introduced in his freshman year of high school. As he played in the club, he realized that he was pretty good.

This sparked his dedication to take the sport seriously and get better. He suffered many losses during the season, even though he knew that it was only his first year and was a learning experience. These losses only drove his dedication even more to do better in his sophomore year. Kim knew he would have to get stronger, be able to jump higher, and get better at his sport.

To practice volleyball outside of school, he would regularly practice in his backyard and play volleyball with church members. One day after one of his practices, his coach, Mrs. Wilser, announced that boys volleyball would officially become a sport his following sophomore year. This fueled Kim’s dedication and motivation to continue to improve and get better at his sport to the best of his abilities.

Kim’s friend, Johnson Chen, is also on the boys volleyball team. They both played together last year as freshmen and plan to continue playing together in their sophomore year.

Chen says, “Even though the Boy’s Volleyball team was introduced late, we still have four years to practice our skills and improve.”

He plans on playing volleyball throughout high school and is thinking about playing in college. A bible verse he likes to remember is John 13:7, which says, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

Kim says, “It reminds me that even when I’m going through tough times, the verse reminds me that it’s all part of God’s plan and it’ll all work out in the end.”
