Boys Basketball: Gutty effort powers Penn to Regional Championship

A gutty effort by the Penn Boys Basketball Team helped the Kingsmen pull away in the fourth quarter to defeat Chesterton, 49-42, an advance to the Championship Game of the IHSAA high school boys basketball Regional at Michigan City on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

Penn (23-3) will play the winner of Saturday’s second Regional Semi-Final Game between Northridge (18-8) and Munster (22-4).

The Regional Championship Game is set for 8 p.m. tonight (Saturday, March 9, 2019) at Michigan City High School.

All-State Candidates Noah Applegate and Drew Lutz scored 17 points each to spearhead the Kingsmen assault.

Applegate battled for a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Applegame, Penn’s All-Time Leading scorer in Boys Basketball, now has 1,674 career points. Applegate became just the eighth player in Penn Boys Basketball history to reach the 500-point mark in one season, and how has 520 points in 2018-2019.

Lutz, who became just the seventh player in Penn Boys Basketball history to reach the coveted 1,000-point mark, now has 1,043 points in his career.

Lutz now has 488 points this season.

Kegan Hoskins scored 12 points, including 6-of-8 clutch free-throw shooting, to help the Kingsmen maintain the upperhand in the fourth quarter.
