Basketball: Hummel & Coolman named to Indiana Futures Teams

Hummel & Coolman named to Basketball Futures All-Star Games

Penn Boys Basketball player Caleb Coolman and Penn Girls Basketball Player Addison Hummel have been named to play in the 2025 Indiana North Futures Team. The prestigious Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Futures Games showcase the talents of the top Freshmen and Sophomores boys and girls basketball players in Indiana.

Hummel and the Girls North Futures Team will play the South in a Futures Boys-Girls Doubleheader on Monday, June 2, at Fishers High School. The Girls game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. EDT.

Coolman and the Boys North Futures Team will play the South in the second game of the Futures Doubleheader on Monday, June 2, at Fishers High School, which is scheduled for an 8 p.m. EDT tip-off.

Penn is the only school with a Freshman on both the Boys and the Girls teams.

Hummel, a 6-0 forward, averaged 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds for the Kingsmen this season. She also averaged 1.5 steals and a 1.0 blocks per game.

The Kingsmen finished with a 19-6 record.

Hummel helped the Kingsmen win 13 of their last 15 games, including a 31-29 upset of No. 10 Northridge on the Raiders’ home court. Hummel scored 15 of Penn’s 31 points in the stunning victory.

Named Second-Team All-Northern Indiana Conference, Hummel was also on the ballot for the South Bend Tribune Player of the Year as a freshman.

Coolman was recently voted second in a Sports Illustrated poll for the best Freshman Boys Basketball Player in the Nation out of a total of 20 players nominated across the nation.

A 6-foot-4 point guard, Coolman is the first Freshman named First-Team All-NIC in more than 50 years. He might be the first Freshman All-NIC First-Team selection ever, but NIC records aren’t available prior to the 1970-71 season.

Leasing Penn to a 16-9 record, Coolman helped the Kingsmen finish with a 6-1 record in the Northern Indiana Conference (South Bend Riley and South Bend St. Joseph also finished 6-1 in the NIC, and Riley was the NIC champion based on the league tiebreaker).

Coolman scored 17 points as Penn defeated No. 1 and eventual Class 3-A State Champion South Bend St. Joseph 76-72, and he scored 32 points and rallied Penn from a 15-point deficit to a 67-66 victory against No. 12 Class 4-A Fort Wayne Wayne.

Coolman led the state (according to MaxPreps) in free-throw shooting percentage (101-of-110 for 92 percent). He led Penn in points (15.6), rebounds (6.0), assists (4.8) and steals (2.0).
