Boys Basketball: Kingsmen stun Blue Blazers in Sectional opener

Penn rallies to knock out Elkhart Central in Sectional

Freshman Markus Burton hit a free throw with 7.7 seconds left, and Senior Derek Derda hammer-blocked a last-season shot by Elkhart Central as the Penn Kingsmen scored a stunning 52-51 victory against the Blue Blazers in Class 4-A High School Boys Basketball Sectional action on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.

The Kingsmen rallied from an eight-point deficit to avenge a 69-66 loss to Elkhart Central in the regular season. This was the last meeting in the storied rivalry between the Kingsmen and the Blue Blazers. Elkhart Central is merging with Elkhart Memorial to form Elkhart High School for the 2020-2021 school year. Penn closes out the series against the Blue Blazers, 43-33.
Penn advances to the Semi-final round of the Elkhart Sectional. The Kingsmen will play the winner of the Warsaw-Goshen Game at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020.
Burton finished with 25 points.
Derda scored 18 points for Penn.
