As the last trace of ice melts in the Icebox and skates are hung up, Grady Harrell steps off the hockey rink and heads for the dirt of the baseball diamond. After a successful hockey season for Penn, Harrell is bringing his confidence and momentum to the start of baseball season.

“One of my biggest takeaways from the hockey season was beating Saint Joe three times and winning the city tournament,” Harrel said. “Our team was extremely close, and that strong bond made it even more special.”

This sense unity and competitiveness carries over from baseball to hockey. While hockey sharpens his speed and agility, baseball demands patience and precision which forces Harrell to constantly adjust his mindset between sports.

“The way I transition mentally is knowing I’m one of the best players on the field and on the ice,” he said. “I’ve been working hard all winter, so im excited to bring that work into baseball season and show the results.”

This hard work that Grady puts in does not go unnoticed by teammates.

“Grady is a great teammate and one of my best friends,” baseball teammate Brock Donat said. “His work ethic has no limits, every time I want to hit or train I know he’ll be there. This pushes everybody around him to also be better.”

Despite the demanding schedule, Harrell stays motivated by his love of both sports. “What motivates me is knowing that all my hardwork will pay off in the long run.”

Now preparing for the season ahead, Harrell has been refining his swinging, specifically letting the ball get deeper to drive it the opposite way. He also is putting work in the weight room, building strength and explosiveness for the upcoming season. With his dedication and mindset he is ready to make an impact. The busy schedule he has is not something that he would want any other way.
