The Penn Boys Cross Country team competed at the Culver Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Kingsmen scored 143 points to grab the 4th place spot beating Elkhart by 33 points.

Senior Jack Ryan led the Kingsmen with a time of 16:42. This is the second time this season that he has been Penn’s number-one runner.

Matt Givens bounced back from a poor performance last week with an excellent time of 16:53. This led him to a placement of second for Penn and 26th overall.

10 seconds later Junior Kush Grewal finished with a time of 17:02, giving him a placement of 31st overall.

Sophomore Brody Lederer placed 33rd with a time of 17:09. Lederer was the only underclassman for Penn in the varsity race.

Tanner Mammolenti finished two seconds behind Brody in 17:11. Mammolenti recently got over being sick, but is still scoring, as he placed fifth for Penn. He placed 34th overall.

Kale Grewal fought his way to a time of 17:25, placing 39th overall and sixth for Penn.

Rounding out the top seven, Jack Scalise got a time of 17:28. He placed 40th overall.

After the team struggled for the last few weeks, Jack Ryan remarked,  “I think this race was a big improvement over our last two weeks and gives us some momentum going into NIC that we can hopefully carry into tournament season.”

He is also excited about his individual performance, saying, “I’m happy with winning for Penn but I still have parts of my race I need to improve to race better and help the team as much as I can.”

The Kingsmen will now shift their focus to the NIC Championships on Oct. 5 at Ox Bow Park.
