Senior Alexander Hawthorne hits 7-of-8 three-pointers and Penn stuns top-ranked St. Joseph

Senior leader Alexander Hawthorne scored 21 points on 7-of-8 three-point shooting and the Penn Kingsmen upset No. 1 (Class 3-A) South Bend St. Joseph, 76-72, in Northern Indiana Conference high school boys basketball on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025.

Sophomore Peyton Miamba scored 18 points and battled for six rebounds.

Freshman Caleb Coolman scored 17 points and had four assists. He hit two free throws with 9.8 seconds left to give the Kingsmen their 76-72 edge.

Ben Murphy’s leaping steal and airborne dish to Coolman set up the clinching free throws.

Tayshon Bardo scored seven points for the Kingsmen.

Murphy scored four points and had six assists.

Led by Hawthorne’s torrid shooting, Penn hit 14-of-21 three-pointers (66.7 percent). The Kingsmen shot 49.1 percent overall.

Penn outrebounded St. Joseph 32-25, including a 14-8 advantage in offensive boards.

Penn fought back from an early 14-5 deficit to lead 38-35 at halftime. The Kingsmen led by as many as 11 points, 57-46.
