Standing tall between the goalposts, Janiah Juarez a senior at Penn High School is her team’s last line of defense. With laser-focused eyes, she has become the backbone of the squad, saving countless goals and earning the nickname “Ice Cube.” But for Juarez, being a goalie is more than just about blocking shots it’s about the leadership, strategy, and mentality of the game.
Unfortunately, a heartbreaking MCL tear set her back from her goal, now it’s not only about the thrill of her game but working her way back up to the level she wants to be at.
Soccer isn’t the easiest sport to play, lots of people tend to give up or quit throughout playing, or even get serious injuries that can set them back; unlike Juarez she never gave up. The second she felt her MCL tear she knew that what she was looking forward to was being sidelined.
With grueling physical therapy, every day was an inch closer to her comeback. Her journey to not give up is a testament to her resilience, showing her passion for the game.
“You have to mentally be there all the time, and sometimes on your worst day, it’s probably the roughest just genuinely on my knees, that was never a good part,” Juarez said.
Juarez’ motivation just proves her determination. She says she is determined to never give up and leans on her faith during challenging times.
“My biggest supporter is my mom and honestly just God, I’ve always prayed to him every time before games,” Juarez said.
Teammate Gewn Elier says Juarez is a shining light on the team.
“You can see every time she comes, she puts 100% effort and always has, a smile on her face,” Elier said.
Now by this season as she’s completely healed, Juarez had been able to regain her position as a key player and an asset to her team.
Janiah Juarez’s journey from injury to recovery to now going into her last high school season is a powerful reminder that the human spirit is capable of extraordinary feats.
Her road to getting where she is today is a beacon of hope for anyone facing challenges, showing that with determination and support. Even the bumpiest roads can be driven on.
